The Department of Mathematics had its inception in St. Joseph’s College, Moolamattom with the appointment of Professor Joseph Thomas way back in 1982 when the College started Pre Degree First Group. When the Government of Kerala sanctioned B. Sc. Mathematics (Model I) as an additional course in 2014, the Department of Mathematics had its ceremonious beginning. The sanctioned strength of the programme is 24. Dr Sabukkutty M G, The present Principal, joined the Department in 1996 when the BBM program was newly introduced in addition to B. Sc. Chemistry in St. Joseph’s College. After 33 years of glorious service, the first Head of the Department, Professor Joseph Thomas retired from the College in 2015.

Mathematics, conventionally regarded as a strenuous discipline, undergoes a paradigmatic change here at St. Joseph’s College. It is a means to improve the critical thinking and problem-solving skills of the students to suit the demands of the global world.

The Department is keen on having inclusive teacher assistance to the students even beyond the confines of class hours. By the very effort of the eminent faculty, the preconceived notions of Mathematics refines into a delightful affair. Thus the students here are well equipped to go through the University examinations with instilled confidence

‘Applicable Mathematics’, the Open Course offered by the Department in the fifth semester of the programme to the students of other departments, is a conglomeration of diverse topics equipped to provide the essential basic mathematical skills. It is very much helpful in facing competitive examinations and also in the field of higher education.

To complement the student’s learning experience, the department offers an elective course titled ‘Basic Python and Typesetting in LaTeX’ to enhance their programming skills and equip them with valuable technical expertise.” The Department ensures the state of the art technology in facilitating an effective learning environment.
