IMPREZA: “Student Exodus – A Boon or Bane for Economic Growth?”

On September 2nd 2024, the Seminar Hall hosted the first event of the
IMPREZA series for the month of September: “Student Exodus – A Boon or Bane
for Economic Growth?” This programme addressed the ongoing debate on the
impact of student migration on home countries’ economies. The event examined
whether the exodus of students in search of better opportunities abroad contributes
to economic prosperity through remittances and knowledge transfer or if it leads to
a brain drain that hampers future growth.

The discussion included the positive aspects such as remittances sent back
home, the potential for returning students to bring back skills, and the creation of
international networks. Conversely, the negative impacts, including the loss of talent
and human capital, and the resulting challenges to the economic growth of the home
country, were also explored. The session included an interactive Q&A session where
attendees could ask questions and share their viewpoints on the subject, leading to a
lively discussion. The event concluded with a consensus that the impact of student
migration on economic growth is complex and multifaceted.
