The Department of English, which is now a bustling centre of creativity and scholarship, had a humble beginning at the inception of the college in 1981. It became a full-fledged Department, when the Under Graduate programme in English Literature with Copy-Editor as its vocational course began in 2001. After a period of 13 years as a UG Department, it rose to the level of a Post Graduate Department with the commencement of Masters Programme in English Language and Literature in the aided stream in 2014. In addition to the UG and PG programmes in English Literature, the Department offers various Certificate programmes in ‘Designing and DTP’, ‘Communication Skills’, and ‘Business Communication’. The Department also offers an Open Course in ‘Appreciating Films’. Since this college is a sought-after location for cinemas, the Department is keen on linking the student community with the big screen.
To foster the talent for creative writing through stimulating imagination and critical thinking coupled with refining the communication skills of the students and introducing them to the nuances of research for independent learning, thereby making everyone employable.

The Department reaches out to the general public through its unique extension activities of translation. We translate documents from Malayalam to English and vice versa, as per the requirement of the general public. Students are also incorporated in these activities to get an exposure and expertise.
As the Department offers BA English (V) Copy Editor as its UG programme, it is our customary practice to get the students exposed to the novel innovations in the field of printing and publishing. Keeping an eye on offering hands on training on printing technology to the student community, industrial visits are conducted to premier publishing houses.
