Postgraduate and Research Department of Chemistry

The Postgraduate and Research Department of Chemistry is the oldest department at St. Joseph’s College, Moolamattom and has a history of long 29 years in offering rigorous, engaging and meaningful training in the field of Chemical Science to our students. With its inception in 1982 with Pre-degree course, the Department of Chemistry became a full- fledged undergraduate department in 1991.The Department was elevated to a postgraduate department in 1999 and subsequently to a research department in 2005. The Department also received national recognition when it was selected for FIST programme by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India in 2012.Today with 100 UG students, 22 PG students, 4 Ph.D Scholars and 6 faculty members, the Department is one of the leading centre for Research in Chemical Sciences in M.G. University, Kottayam, Kerala. The department has also produced many rank holders and CSIR-UGC winners. So far the department has produced four Ph.Ds.
The Department takes utmost care in providing the best infrastructure facilities which facilitates a smooth teaching-learning process. The Department has a department library which has about 1000 books and also houses sophisticated instrumentation facilities like UV-Visible spectrophotometer, FTIR spectrophotometer, thermogravimetric analyser, Sherwood scientific magnetic susceptibility balance and Elico flame photometer CL 378 which are made available to our PG students, research scholars and students of nearby colleges upon request. These facilities, along with the service of dedicated and well qualified faculties have transformed the Department to one of the best Chemistry departments under Mahatma Gandhi University. The quality practices of learning process in the Department have been reflected in terms of International Research publications and frequent University ranks in PG and UG level. The invaluable contributions of former HODs and pioneers of the Department like Rev. Dr. C. J. Paul CMI, late Dr.Siby Joseph, Dr.Saju M Sebastian, Dr. K. C. Joseph, Dr.Ebey P. Koshy and Dr. George V. Thomas are also unforgettable in nurturing and upbringing the department to its present stature. Dr.Siby Joseph Memorial Charitable Trust was registered to commemorate the memory of Dr.Siby Joseph by the staff and former students of the College in 2015.The manifold visions of the Trust include conduct of seminars and traffic awareness programmes, distribution of scholarships to the deserved and needy at the college level and beyond etc. The Department constantly strives to impart quality education and moral values to its students, transforming them to better citizens of tomorrow.
